Electric Brake Controllers

In Brisbane, it’s a legal requirement for trailers over 750kg to be fitted with an effective braking system. Electric brakes are a popular solution that’s simple, affordable and suitable for most caravans and camper trailers.

Access Auto Electrics recommends REDARC Electric Brake Controllers. We’ve seen them perform time and again, so we trust them to be safe and provide a smoother braking response when towing heavy loads.

Depending on what you’re towing, we may also recommend Elecbrakes. Elecbrakes are a wireless alternative to traditional electric brake controllers. Elecbrakes systems can be installed on any suitable tow vehicle, and they come with a handy smartphone app that allows settings to be adjusted.

Frequently Asked Questions

Do you need a breakaway kit for trailer brakes?

You are required to install a towing breakaway kit on caravans and trailers weighing over 2,000kg GTM. Breakaway kits are designed to bring your trailer to a safe stop if it becomes disconnected from the tow vehicle.

While it’s not a legal requirement, it’s also a good idea to install a breakaway kit in trailers weighing less than 2,000kg. This lowers the risk of accidents when you’re towing a caravan or camper trailer.

What does GTM mean on a trailer?

Gross Trailer Mass (GTM) is the weight of a trailer that’s fully loaded as measured when the trailer is attached to a tow vehicle. You can find the GTM of your caravan or camper trailer listed on a metal plate that’s fixed to the frame.

What is the difference between ATM and GTM?

The maximum weight of a trailer is measured as Aggregate Trailer Mass (ATM) or Gross Trailer Mass (GTM). ATM is the weight of the fully loaded trailer when it’s not attached to a tow vehicle. GTM is the weight of the fully loaded trailer when it is attached to a tow vehicle.

GTM is always lower than ATM because some of the trailer’s mass is applied to the tow vehicle through the towing hitch.
